On 14th November 2024, the Iqbal Institute of Technology and Management (IITM), an NAAC-accredited institution, hosted a thought-provoking inter-college debate on the timely topic, “Should the Reservation System in Education and Jobs in India be Abolished?” The event was graced by the presence of Dr. Yousuf-ul-Umar, Chairman of Iqbal Memorial Trust, whose inspiring words underscored the importance of intellectual engagement and critical discussions on societal issues.
The event commenced with an inauguration by Dr. Rizwan A. Thakur, Director of IITM, who highlighted the significance of engaging young minds in policy discussions that influence social equity. Dr. Thakur emphasized IITM's commitment to fostering intellectual curiosity and civic responsibility, commending participants for addressing such a complex topic.
The debate was further enriched by the presence of Chief Guest, Smt. Rashmi Singh (IAS), and distinguished jury members Shri Masarat Hashim Khan (KAS), Shri Ravinder Pal Singh (KPS), and Shri Shohab Lateef (KAS), who contributed insights from their backgrounds in administration and law enforcement.
Participants from various colleges offered diverse perspectives, analyzing the historical context of reservation, its role in promoting equality, and the ongoing debate surrounding its relevance today. The discourse shed light on both the advantages of reservation for marginalized communities and the challenges it presents in modern Indian society.
Kashmir Law College, Nowshera, emerged as the winners of the debate, with Degree College, Baramullah, securing the second position. The jury members and Chief Guest provided thoughtful reflections, underscoring the importance of balanced viewpoints in policy debates. Dr. Rizwan A. Thakur concluded the event with a vote of thanks, expressing appreciation for the vibrant participation and exchange of ideas that made the debate a resounding success.
